The technical portuguese translation in the present day part II
But what really is an automatic translation system? And why shouldn’t it be used in the portuguese translation services of each technical portuguese translation company?
As the name suggests, these are systems that can perform through computational algorithms, a technical translation in an automated way. Meaning, without a human being involved in the translation.
There are many types of technologies, but the most promising ones are based on the analysis of the source text of the document. The system will read the phrase in the original language to analyze it and then initiate an action. Three approaches stand out:
The direct translation:
This approach has as its primary tool the use of dictionaries to make the translations. It uses a lexicographic corpus and is mainly based on the meaning of words with the use of dictionaries.
Translation by transfer:
Here, we look for segments (phrases), fragments of previously translated phrases. Translated parts are then transferred to the target language. This approach goes beyond the lexicographic system of direct approach, as it also includes phrases or fragments of phrases, not just isolated words. Currently, no portuguese translation service is based solely on this technology because it does not encompass larger contexts that compromise quality.
In this approach, the systems are capable of doing extremely complex searches in a bilingual corpus of stored portuguese translation.
This type of technology is currently, the most widespread. For example, millions of people access daily Google Translate, which automatically translates to multiple languages. Here are conducted highly complex searches in a bilingual corpus of translation (for example, scouring the internet pages) that feeds daily the automatic translation. This type of technology is not used in a contracted translation service, being more commonly used in more informal translations.
Technologies like this are very useful for the translation of simple texts and enable its understanding by the users. Its high level of errors limits the use of this tool to the general understanding of texts, making it impossible to use them for other purposes (publication, for example). For this reason, technical translation companies should not use this tool.
This is the second step on the technical translation service with the help of technologies. We love everything about technical portuguese translation, be sure to CONTACT us if you have any doubts or any questions related to the subject.
